Themes and Style
The film “Trigger Warning” covers a wide scope of themes such as grief, betrayal, military ethics, and even corruption. It also focuses on the story of a woman who is trying to seek closure, but ultimately is pulled into the depths of political treachery. Furthermore, the film “Trigger Warning literally features tactical operations in conjunction with emotionally volatile character moments and self-reflection.”
With respect to colors, the movie is set in gloomy ones, as captured in the desert landscapes and dimly-lit bars. In “Trigger Warning,” the fighting is described as realistic and gritty, with no room for extra over-the-top theatrics. Instead, the movie features unsophisticated brawling, close-range shooting, and intense cat-and-mouse chases.
Mouly Surya, the director of the movie, approaches the film’s genre with Western elements mixed with Southeast Asian aesthetics. This gives the film a somewhat distinct neo-Western feel, portraying the image of a lone woman pitted against a weak evil system. All this ‘system’ needs to be conquered is raw willpower and military training.
IMDb Score and Reviews
As of the beginning of 2025, “Trigger Warning” has a score of 4.6/10 on IMDb and has over 19,000 user ratings. This film’s rating shows that audiences had a mixed and negative reception. Critics have noted that the film seems to be too much on the safe side in regards to the narrative and underutilizes supporting cast members in spite of having good visuals and strong performances from the supporting cast, like Alba.
Many viewers thought that the central mystery of the film was too simple, and the plot included many tropes such as small-town scandals, tragedy that brings back estranged lovers, and a vigilante-like protagonist with a hero complex. While these components are common in the action-thriller spectrum of movies, “Trigger Warning” seems to lack a distinct touch.
Moreover, some reviews have noted quick-paced direction as the highlight of the film alongside charismatic Alba, who adds realism and depth to her character. The action choreography, while not industry-leading, is solid and well shot avoiding the shaking camera syndrome which so many modern thrillers fall under.
Even with its shortcomings, “Trigger Warning” is regarded as a watchable addition, albeit unremarkable, in the increasing collection of Netflix action films. It might prove to be a gratifying experience, however briefly, for fans of Jessica Alba or simpleminded revenge thrillers.
Concluding Remarks
As is clear “Trigger Warning” is a movie that aspires to do a lot, but does not achieve its full potential”. It has a strong main character, an interesting director, and some explosive action scenes. Still, the film falls short of industry standards due to its repetitive themes, especially in a film packed with competition. Action lovers may find value in watching it just once, while curious fans who want to check out Jessica Alba’s return as a fierce fighter primed for an on-screen brawl will be left satisfied.
“Trigger Warning” is not going to be remembered as a classic. What it does do, however, is remind us of Alba’s engaging personality and the charm of international directors coming into the world of action films.”
