The Pursuit of Happyness

Synopsys

The Pursuit of Happyness is a captivating biography-drama film released in 2006. Directed by Gabriele Muccino, it tells the story of entrepreneur and motivational speaker, Chris Gardner. His life story serves as the film’s emotional backbone. In the film, Chris Gardner overcomes sheer determination to rise above poverty and homelessness while simultaneously raising his young son.

In the film’s opening scenes, we meet Chris Gardner (Will Smith) who is a salesman and an entrepreneur desperately trying to sell portable bone density scanners. While the scanners are indeed groundbreaking and innovative, the markets have not yet been fully developed. Because portable bone density scanners are too expensive, not a single salesperson will buy it. Chris’s increasing financial debt escalates in parallel to the mounting friction in his household. Gardner’s Wife, Linda (Thandiwe Newton) decides to move on and relocate to New York, abandoning the family. She leaves Chris with custody of their son, Christopher (now played by Jaden Smith, Will Smith’s son).

Managing Christopher on his own makes life very challenging for Chris. While continuing to sell his medical devices, he is still trying to improve his life. Everything changes for the better, however, when he finds out about an internship opportunity with an internship at the famed brokerage firm, Dean Witter Reynolds, which comes with an intense competition. While the internship is unpaid, it offers the possibility for the full-time role to the best out of the bunch.

Rewards for the program earn him a slot, but things go even more wrong for him. The eviction, unpaid internship, mounting debt, pay-nothings, and other factors mean that Chris and his son will now be homeless. While a large proportion of the population within the United States is already homeless, being homeless to the extent that you have to sleep within subways is a different magnitued of difficulty. Along with enduring all of this, Chris is still trying to impress his supervisors by going to extreme lengths to study financial books, cold call, and exercising extreme amounts of determination.

The factors advance and leading him to the brink of utterly breaking and losing all hope, and the inspiration all comes in the form of his son. It is Chris’s relationship with his son that acts as the emotional bedrock, making his resolve unbreakable. From tender and imaginative games to heart-to-hearts, Chris does everything and all he can to stop his son from being exposed to the worst of their living conditions.

After intense months of work and emotional sacrifice, and hard work, Chris’s struggle finally yields results. In the film’s emotional, soul-stirring, and climactic last scene, Chris receives a full-time position with the company. Chris, stepping into the now, is full of tears but and blends with the crowd but is forever changed. In the film’s last credits, it was revealed that Chris Gardner was able to set up a brokerage firm and became a multimillionaire able to live out a comfortable and successful life.

The film is regarded highly around the globe which is indicative of its emotional appeal and popularity especially among those who cherish tales of perseverance, fatherhood, and dreams achieved against all odds.

Critical Reviews

Overall, the film reviews were mostly positive. Will Smith’s performance received accolades for the depth, sincerity, and emotional impact. Critics praised his ability to capture a character that fluctuates between a melodramatic vulnerable and heroic figure. The chemistry between the father and son duo was praised for adding depth to the authenticity of their relationship.

Reviewers praised the film for depicting a message of hope and for not glorifying poverty. The film does not seek to romanticize homelessness or reduce the subjects of the film to mere plot devices, instead, the film treats the subjects with dignity. Chris’s experiences are not simply backdrops; they are central conflicts that permeate every scene and are critical to every decision.

Still, some critics were worried about the film’s message about individualism and capitalism. The critics noted that while the story is uplifting, the framing of success is problematic: it is portrayed as a personal win, largely detached from the socio-political context that render such victories few and far between. Most, however, noted that any story with such raw emotional appeal was always going to triumph over ideology.

Themes and Analysis

The Pursuit of Happyness explores the multifaceted nature of the American Dream. The film tackles the question of what pursuing happiness really means, framing it as the dignity of self-determination, the love of a father and his son, and the triumph of integrity over despair.

The title arises from a misspelled word Chris notices outside a daycare center, which underscores the irony and unattainability of happiness. The film suggests that happiness is not something that is simply bestowed upon us; it often must be fought for, and at a great cost. That being said, the film does provide a glimmer of hope that happiness can be attained after a long and sustained effort.

The film also tackles fatherhood. Chris not only expresses affection toward his son, but he also demonstrates it practically as he must feed, protect, and guide a young boy with virtually no resources. The relationship that the two shared humanizes the struggle and elevates the story from selfish dreams to selfless family love.

Conclusion

The movie “The Pursuit of Happyness” is not only a change from poor to rich but more of how a person fights tough situations and outlines the true dedication of a dad, and the sacrifices one can make for a better life. This film, which is anchored by the emotionally gripping performance of Will Smith, is a true testament to authentic determination.

It brings to the forefront the reality of life, driving sadness and unmentionable grief which clearly shows that though one may not attain happiness, but the pursuit of happiness is what keeps one human.
