The Meg

Synopsis

The Meg (2018) is an action film steeped in science fiction. It brings back the ancient human obsession with gigantic sea monsters, specifically the megalodon, an ancient shark that was believed to have gone extinct. The film is directed by Jon Turteltaub and it is inspired by the book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten. The film features an underwater adventure and combines the spectacle of Hollywood blockbuster features with the age old theme of humanity taking on nature on an epic scale of unforgiving confrontation and survival.

The megalodon’s story starts with a rescue mission in a submarine which is led by deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham). During the operation, Jonas encounters a massive, unidentified creature attacking the damaged submersible. While he attempts to save part of the crew, they are attacked by what he claims is a monstrous sea creature. While he believes that his account will be taken seriously, he is branded reckless and disgraced, which forces him to retire in shame.

In the present, Mana One, which is still funded by Jack Morris (Rainn Wilson), has transformed into a high-tech research facility exploring the Mariana Trench. They believe that what was previously considered the ocean floor may actually contain a layer of hydrogen sulfide concealing a deeper section of the ocean. Five years ago, a submersible crew that included scientist Lori was trapped during a mission to the trench. Jonas, who had previously been retired, is called upon to execute a risky rescue mission. His reluctance vanishes the moment he finds out that Lori is one of the crew members.

Once again, Jonas comes across the creature, which is confirmed this time to be a 75-foot-long megalodon. The sub is successfully rescued, only for the megalodon to escape into open waters, creating the potential for widespread panic.

As the conflict escalates, Jonas is joined by an ensemble cast of scientists to capture and eliminate the creature, including Suyin Zhang (Li Bingbing), her daughter Meiying, and Dr. Minway Zhang. The Meg rampages through the ocean, attacking creatures and people alike, including boats and even a crowded beach. The team employs increasingly desperate methods in a strained attempt to eliminate the relentless beast.

Cast & Performances

Jason Statham as Jonas Taylor

Statham continues his trend of portraying the stern action hero with a bit of a grim twist. He does, however, bring a semblance of warmth to his character which elevates him from being a mere stereotype. With his deep voice, muscular body, and swimming combat skills, he is the aquatic version of his typical roles. Though not needing much emotional variety, the character of Jonas benefits from Statham softening what could be harsh edges.

Li Bingbing as Suyin Zhang

Bingbing’s interpretation of Suyin infuses the character with empathy and intellect. She portrays a scientist as well as a single mother which adds a layer of warmth to the narrative. It was also key in broadening the film’s reach to China, where it performed incredibly well. Their chemistry, though subtle, stands out and complements Statham’s character.

Rainn Wilson as Jack Morris

As the eccentric billionaire funding the Mana One research station, Wilson provides comic relief. While his character does become more serious as the stakes rise, he retains some of the most flamboyant characterization in the cast, caricaturing corporate stupidity and myopia.

Supporting Cast

Cliff Curtis, Ruby Rose, Page Kennedy and Winston Chao all complete the cast, each bringing a different set of skills. Every character has a designated function within the plot, ranging from technical aides to comic relief and tragic victims. Although their personalities are not well fleshed out, they do sustain the plot and diversify the interplay between the characters.

Direction & Visuals

The Meg is directed by Jon Turteltaub, who is known for films such as National Treasure and Cool Runnings. He tackles The Meg with a blend of earnestness and self-aware humor. He does not fully lean into camp, but he does allow for some levity, given the absurdity of the premise. This balance benefits the film by making it suitable for casual viewers and fans of action-horror alike.

The Meg is visually striking, with the underwater sequences featuring atmospheric lighting, shadow play, and deep blues that evoke both wonder and mystery. The Megalodon is designed to blend prehistoric features and monstrous scale, making it terrifying. While practical sets are used for the interior of the Mana One Station, CGI is used for the shark, and all major action sequences, such as the beach stampede and boat destruction.

The final showdown, in which Jonas fights the Meg, showcases the blending of over-the-top action and creature-feature thrills that the film’s outrageous yet satisfying excitement is packed with.

The Meg flirts with philosophy, but largely revolves humanity’s arrogance in tampering with nature, the limits of science, and the resilience of the human spirit. The themes of environmental awareness also come into play, especially where the shark attacking a whale or disrupting ecosystems, but take a backseat to the spectacle and action.

The tone avoids both extremes: the humor and silliness of Sharknado, or the darkness of Jaws. It finds balance in a world where the action is serious, humor is light, and the stakes high, but never too heavy.

Reception and Legacy

The Meg garnered mixed-to-positive reviews from its initial critics. While the film’s premise was considered silly, its pacing, visual effects, and Statham’s performance received praise. The film’s safeness was a common theme among critiques; however, it was largely agreed that the film provided solid entertainment for a summer blockbuster.

The Meg was a financial success, grossing over $530 million worldwide. The film performed particularly well in China due to co-production deals as well as Chinese actors and settings. The film’s success further solidified that there still was an appetite for ‘monster-shark’ movies when they were executed with scale and flair.

The film’s success led to the development of a sequel, Meg 2: The Trench released in 2023, further expanding the franchise.

Conclusion

The Meg (2018) is a big-budget shark movie that offers breathtaking underwater fight scenes with modern 21st century globalized themes. Starring Jason Statham, the film offers giant shark action alongside a charismatic lead performance. While the film fails to redefine the genre, it does focus on updating its premise for modern audiences.

The Meg is a delightful addition to the long list of man-versus-nature films, featuring stunning visuals and a diverse cast. If you want to witness Jason Statham in all his glory battling a prehistoric shark, then The Meg is the movie for you. Whether it is the adrenaline rush you seek, the spectacle, or the jawdropping visuals, The Meg promises to deliver an entertaining experience.
