Survive

Summary

Survive is a 2024 French science fiction thriller film written and directed by Frédéric Jardin. It dramatizes an epic fight for survival that occurs during an unparalleled natural catastrophe. The plot centers on a family’s frantic attempt to survive after a global disaster permanently alters the structure of the Earth in alarming and unprecedented ways.

The film’s protagonist Julia, played by Émilie Dequenne, struggles to get her family back together. They include husband Tom (Andreas Pietschmann), teenage daughter Cassie (Lisa Delamar), and young son Ben (Lucas Ebel), who embark on what is supposed to be a standard birthday cruise for Ben. Their calm sailing adventure turns into a nightmare when a strange and powerful storm attempts to destroy their sailboat.

Instead of sailing, the family needs to come to their sense. They need to come to terms with the fact that they find themselves trapped in a truly bizarre and alien world. This world is a perpetually deserted ocean which has for some reason undergone polar shifting. The planet’s magnetic poles have shifted violently and, in doing so, the oceans have temporarily vanished, creating a vast, alien-like desert of salt and stone. This region contains no water, life, or even hope.

However, it becomes apparent that the cataclysm has revealed more than just the ocean floor. From the abyss have emerged gigantic, crustacean-like creatures that now prey upon the surface of the Earth. While these predators are adapted to the deep sea, they are now unleashed in an environment devoid of humanity’s control.

The family’s expedition transforms into a desperate attempt to stay alive. They need to traverse this unforgiving landscape and reach the elevated areas of land before the ocean makes good on its promise to come crashing back—an all-encompassing tidal wave that will obliterate everything in its way. In the midst of the water rising to assert its dominion, Julia and Tom have to navigate the spiraling tensions within the group, the children’s terror, and their growing hopelessness. Along the journey, they meet other survivors including a character of dubious motivation known only as the Harpoon Man (Arben Bajraktaraj).

However, in the case of this story, survive doesn’t only mean outrunning peril. It is about what we carry deep within ourselves as we confront the unthinkable—and the lengths we go to, to shield those we deeply care about.

Themes and Symbolism:

Survive carefully intertwines multiple themes within its duration and creates a lasting impact:

Environmental Disaster and Climate Anxiety: The contemporary threat faced because of climate change and the existence of our environment is significantly impacted by the thoughts surrounding Earth undergoing sudden and catastrophic changes due to the interferences made by humans or natural rebalancing.

Family and Sacrifice: At its core, this is a film focused on the extent of what a family is willing to go through for one another. This deeply explores parental sacrifice, sibling relations, and the emotional load of survival.

Man vs. Nature: The terrifying creatures from the ocean floor are not just monsters—they represent the consequences of the overwhelming ecological imbalance and hubris in thinking we are capable of controlling nature.

Isolation: The film emphasizes the despair and loneliness that follows societal disasters. The world is stripped off society, geographically isolating the family, but this also stretches their emotions, creating an isolating feeling.

Critics’ Feedback

Survive has received a blend of positive and negative feedback from audiences and critics. Most critics have appreciated the film’s creative ideas and execution within the budget limitations, saying the film was well directed given the budget. Dequenne’s performance is focused on as emotionally relatable which gives dimension to the story while visual style has been praised for its interesting portrayal of empty settings and warm lighting.

Reviewers have characterized this film as a “gritty, intelligent survival thriller” with some issues in the pacing and explanation. Although the narrative’s setup is suspenseful, some critics argue the character development is lacking contending the character arcs are insufficiently completed and the conclusion feels hasty. Even some of the critics who called the creature design and visual effects unambitious, said the efficiency in execution considering the scope and resources of the film is praiseworthy.

Responses at this point have been more split among audiences. Some were impressed by the idea of the plot as well as its tension while others deemed the film devoid of blockbuster finesse, runaway action or stylistic polish. Despite critics praising the film, the gap between expectations and what was delivered has lead to divided opinion among audiences. Some appreciated the indie-style realism while others found the pace too slow.

Conclusion

Survive, strikingly, is one of the few films in the science fiction survival genre that incorporates intimacy into its narrative. There is no over-the-top CGI or large, awe-inspiring physical props; instead, humanity is at the core of this extraordinary story. The film paints a picture of a singular family navigating through a new world, symbolizing the instinctive urge to protect loved ones while showcasing the societal infrastructure’s frail nature.

Survive is not the perfect film, but it does provoke new thoughts and reflections, which is what makes it stand out. It teaches us that the deadliest of monsters are not always visible; often, they lie dormant, waiting for the right moment to be unleashed.
