Raymond & Ray

Synopsis

Rodrigo García directed the 2022 film Raymond & Ray, and co-wrote it with Gigi Levangie. The film tackles disentangled familial relationships as well as familial grief and reconciliation. It has elements of trauma, and the film’s absurd black comedy puts life’s absurdities under a microscope. The film’s narrative centers around the two half-brothers, Raymond and Ray. The two brothers are brought together by the death of their father, Harris. Even after life drove the two of them apart, Raymond makes the first move to inform Ray about their father’s death and makes sure that he comes to the funeral.

The film opens with a rather put together man who has suffered the slings and arrows of forgiving life as portrayed by McGregor, Raymond. It is obvious that McGregor’s character is a well organized, put together man with a history of failed marriages. He decides to reach out to Ray, an ex-jazz musician who has been an addict and is now a recovering one, played by Hawke, to let him know that Harris has died. Though Raymond does not initially agree to the funeral, he does agree after some persuasion to make the trip with him.

What follows is a road trip that transforms into a journey of unraveling emotions and rediscovering oneself. While traveling and after arriving at the small town where their father lived, the brothers meet several people who knew Harris, all of whom seem to have been positively charmed or influenced by the man. This perception sharply contrasts with the deeply negative experiences Raymond and Ray suffered from growing up under the man’s authority.

As the story unfolds, the brothers discover that Harris had very unconventional wishes for his funeral. One of the most shocking is that he wanted them to dig his grave. While this adds a darkly humorous element to the film, it also metaphorically represents the emotional work the brothers must do to “bury” the trauma their father left them, along with his body.

In the town, talking to Harris’s nurse during his last days, Ray’s love interest Kiera (Sophie Okonedo) helps him process long suppressed emotions along with Lucia (Maribel Verdú) who helps him confront his feelings. The men figure out that they have more half-siblings than they realized, further expanding on the plethora of secret children and lives their father had.

To Harris, the film exhibits balanced contemplative and comedy-driven depth. It explores the impact of the relatives, forgiveness, and the transcendence of imposed molds. The positive and negative charm of the eccentric small town and the brothers’ starkly different selves all blend into the sad and yet, emotionally deep, captivating, dynamic body of the film.

The brothers don’t entirely solve all their problems, but their progressive steps towards self-healing and self-acceptance with the process of unlearning their own judgment of each other is tellingly profound.

Cast & Crew

Ewan McGregor as Raymond

McGregor plays the character of Raymond who, together with his brother, is portrayed as more successful and orderly. His portrayal is understated, contemplative, and full of internalized emotions. In the emotional storyline, he represents the character’s balance and is the more measured and rational counterpart to Hawke’s Ray.

Ethan Hawke as Ray

As Ray, Hawke does not disappoint. He brings to the role a blend of wit, charm, and vulnerability. Ray, a former jazz trumpeter, suffers from addiction and unresolved personal issues. His character’s journey is the most moving of all. Hawke brings to it as much humor as he does seriousness, showing us why he is considered one of the most versatile actors of his generation.

Maribel Verdú as Lucia

As Lucia, the intelligent and gentle caregiver of Harris, Verdú’s performance is graceful. To the two brothers, she gives a fresh angle to their views about their father, aiding them to slowly disentangle the emotional knapsack of unresolved issues they have.

Sophie Okonedo as Kiera

Kiera is a character who tenderly reaches into Ray’s life. Okonedo’s performance is calm and rooted, and it is that calmness that makes Kiera’s help to Ray regain his emotional balance all the more remarkable.

Maxim Swinton and Chris Silcox join the cast in supporting roles, adding to the depth of the community and lending detail to the story.

Alfonso Cuarón, the oscar winning filmmaker, provides a name to the production team as one of the producers. Curtis and Lynn, also deeply experienced producers, ensure the film receives a personal yet polished treatment.

Cinematography: Igor Jadue-Lillo

The visual style of the film is simple but very suggestive. Igor uses muted colors and natural light to express the film’s story, and this gives the film a grounded and realistic tone.

Music: Jeff Beal

The film’s score, written by Jeff Beal, is to the point and understated in its purity. It gives the film the space and latitude to breathe as the jazz Ray plays in his scenes evokes his earlier life and lends a touch of emotional depth.
