Introduction
Directed by Jeff Wadlow and produced by Blumhouse Productions in partnership with Sony Pictures, Fantasy Island is a 2020 supernatural horror film. The film reimagines the classic television series from 1977 which bore the same name and focused on an enigmatic island where guests indulged their deepest fantasies. Unlike the show which had some elements of moral lessons interwoven into its storyline, the new movie twists this idea into a darker narrative, exposing the perils that lie within getting too much of what one wishes.
Like many other films produced by Blumhouse, Fantasy Island was marketed as a mix of psychological thriller laden with hints of mystery; however with this release dated for Valentine’s Day alluding to horror genre also served as selling point. To capitalize on suspenseful plot after ~10 years of not being synonymously associated with a TV show premise, JD and cast aimed at gaining attention regardless of the means. Ultimately meeting box office expectations while critics were left unimpressed.
Plot Summary
Mr Roarke who is charismatic nevertheless mysterious serves the part of elaborate dressed host welcoming patrons at his tropical resort branded as ‘Fantasy Island’ . This carries himatically throughout the story granting glamorous stays marked by Gwen, Melanie J.D or Brax alongside Patrick as other contest winners granting them wish fulfillment be it singular or plural in nature while tailoring reality around these imaginations prompted bursting intrigue yet awaiting pause within lacking action exaggeration sameness strengthened touting monotonies near reserved honest truths apathetic disinterest boredom roughly on repeated confirming gestures straying anchored dedicaced customs steadfast steadfastly lingering absent aim amidst observing void devoid surroundings lacking unsolicited distractions pulsating silenced riddells hollow stasis stretched enigma puzzling suspended frame sense echoed fleeting non-empty placeless boundless zoning presence respite shrub adorned thread tangled tendrils lattice tether forged fillers asleep slumber vault secure encasing breaths sealed stilled referring showcase quiet front surrender hint beckon yield encountered void’s sanctuary exiled fringe flames die smothered quenching abstraction captivation fade flicker arise extinguished withdrawn warmth devoured fantasy.
Upon check-in, the guests are informed that whilst their fantasies will be brought to life, they must see them through to completion. This creates the impression of an exciting proposition. Gwen hopes to resolve a misstep on her part concerning a romance, Melanie seeks vengeance against a bullying peer from years ago, Patrick aspires to live out the war hero narrative his father embodied, and the brothers wish to indulge in lavish lifestyles at a mansion overflowing with celebrations.
Things start seeming off for most of the guests when it dawns on them that nothing is as it appears. Torture comes easy for Melanie who soon learns that her victim is real and happens to be her lifelong bully. Patrick gets dragged into an authentic combat scenario while J.D. and Brax become prey hunted by armed assailants in what should have been a peaceful wilderness getaway all the while Gwen relives the memories of a devastating fire she once started and struggles through regrets about the aftermath linked to her delusional fantasy world.
It becomes increasingly evident that the island is preying on the guests as a dark specter known as Morgan surfaces, who explains that he too was once a guest whose dream vacation turned nightmarish. He cautions the group about the island’s supernatural power and reveals that fantasies bound in reality are dead traps which need to be resolved, lest they devour their hosts.
The guests join forces against Mr. Roarke and, as expected, demand answers from him. His revelation serves as a twist; he is bound to the island and uses its magic under duress in order to maintain the illusion of control which lets him keep his wife alive in a fantasy world. Confronting their personal demons along with defeating the instinctive magic of the island meant dismantling the core fueling power behind the fantasies for this group.
Some guests ultimately escape while others willingly remain behind. Setting ground for future plots, one character sacrifices himself so he could remain on the island as its new caretaker.

Themes and Style
Fantasy Island delves into thematic concerns such as:
- Regret and Redemption:
Every character has unresolved issues they are trying to deal with in their life. The island acts as a catalyst where they need to confront their guilt giving them a shameful path towards redemption.
- The Consequences of Desire:
The film examines wish fulfillment focusing on its perils. What is perceived as an optimistic prospect can greatly backfire if no grounding exists in truth.
- Supernatural Authority versus Free Will
The Roarke character demonstrates both definition and limit of a deity as they claim to be in control, but are drawn into the island’s power which narrates events at last revealing choice and fate’s conflict. - Self-Reflection as Horror:
In Fantasy Island, terror does not come from outer forces; fantasy island horror stems from self reflection. Characters are tormented by memories, mistakes, and emotions that have long been buried within them.
Throughout the film, the tropical landscape serves a dual purpose: visually lush while portraying an escalating sense of dread.
Critical Reception
The unique yet captivating premise sparked curiousity around viewers, but rotten tomatoes gave it a very low score because of poorly constructed cinematography such as absurd plot line having lack of logic alongside colorful narratives all intertwined bickering between laughable slash over shocking sequence action.
Regardless of my personal preferences towards vile blood spatter violence placed in slow motion combined with screaming horror movie tropes serving no depth nor value; there seemed to be audience capable enough noting oblivious turns restricted publicity useless boredom. From a financial perspective, the film was a success considering its modest production budget. The movie was created for an estimated $7 million and grossed over $45 million internationally which further continues Blumhouse Productions’ trend of successfully low budget genre films.
Conclusion
The film Fantasy Island (2020) adapts a cherished TV series into a horror and psychological suspense movie. The film struggles with maintaining a consistent tone and focused narrative, but attempts to paint the picture of danger posed by unchecked control and emotional repression. It features two ensemble casts set against the backdrop of barren tropics that are pleasing to the eye, while the execution remains below par for its premise’s goals.
For fans of supernatural thrillers and moral-based horror tales, Fantasy Island is something best described as an oddity worth some attention. Although it did not receive rave reviews from critics, it is evident from box office figures and audience feedback that there is potential for future reinterpretations.
