The upcoming Formula 1 film by Joseph Kosinski is becoming one of the most awaited movies for 2025. The plot centers on a past-his-prime driver played by Brad Pitt who is signed by Mercedes as one of the new drivers for the forthcoming Formula 1 season. The trailers have featured the vigorous racing sequences, the majority of which were filmed using practical effects. This promo also captures the car enthusiast aspect of the film by quoting a famous anime movie with one of the most legendary racing sequences in film history.
The latest F1 poster was shared by Dolby Cinema’s official X (former Twitter) account, and anime fans greatly appreciated the new promo. The poster’s simplistic design contains Brad Pitt mid stride away from his Formula 1 vehicle, which is cropped at the top of the poster, alongside the logo of the movie at the bottom of the poster. At first glance, this is just another minimalistic design poster but Akira fans were fast to point out the emblematic mirage of the film.Akira is often acclaimed as one of the best anime movies of all time alongside the likes of Studio Ghibli’s films, Ghost in the Shell, and Perfect Blue. Apart from its breathtaking portrayal of a cyberpunk futuristic Tokyo, Akira is also famous for its breathtaking chase scenes. The lead character Kaneda rides an iconic red motorcycle which has appeared on numerous film posters that have now become iconic, also known as the promotional red velvet motorcycle. The most recent F1 poster draws directly from that classic Akira poster of Kaneda walking towards his bike.
Apple TV is known for cavalierly spending money on financially high stake bold projects. The streamer has previously backed Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon alongside Downwind, Blitz, Napoleon, Tetris, and many other movies which were not given financial backing by other major streamers. Admittedly some of these projects did not result in success, but that has not stopped Apple from continuing with their overly aggressive strategy.
F1 places Apple at a whole new level of risk. The film is reported to be one of the most expensive movies ever made with a budget exceeding $300 million! While F1 isn’t the most expensive movie ever made (Star Wars: The Force Awakens $447 million) and Avatar The Way of Water ($350-430 million) is just behind it, $300 million is still a staggering figure to spend on a movie, even when it is about the most costly sport in the world.
Apart from Brad Pitt, F1 features Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, Simone Ashley, and Callie Cooke. As you would expect, the film also includes key F1 drivers such as Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, and Carlos Sainz Jr. in cameo roles. The F1 film releases in theatres on the June 25 and will be available on Apple TV+, but the exact date is yet to be announced.
