Controversial ‘Star Wars’ Director Hints at Return to the Galaxy

The previous ten years have not been overly smooth for the Star Wars franchise. However, it is certain that the majority of fans consider Rian Johnson’s 2017 installment The Last Jedi to be the nadir of the franchise. Johnson later enjoyed considerable success with the Knives Out films and the Poker Face series. Even so, he remains the director of the most controversial Star Wars film to date. Most people did not like the film, but the director has stated that he is willing to go back and finish the trilogy he initially intended to make.

Rian Johnson had a talk with The Independent not too long ago regarding both the second season of Poker Face and the forthcoming Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. During the chat, he also brought up Star Wars and shared how The Last Jedi was certainly an experience for him, but did not leave a lingering blue-milk-like taste in his mouth. In fact, Johnson further quipped that were he to be called back to finish off his trilogy, he would jump at the chance. In his own words:

I mean, I kind of went down the murder mystery rabbit hole — I’m focused on making other stuff. But that wouldn’t rule out it happening down the line. If I get back in the Star Wars universe someday, I’d be the happiest person.”

Critically, The Last Jedi was well-received upon its release, boasting an impressive 91% Rotten Tomatoes rating. But the same love did not carry over to the fanbase. A rather bigoted portion of the fanbase (far larger than any Star Wars fan would care to admit) took issue with the movie for seemingly every reason imaginable.

But even casual fans saw issues with the story as a whole and the portrayal of famous characters such as Luke Skywalker, portrayed by Mark Hamill. In any case, none of the backlash, no matter how unfounded, seems to have bothered Johnson regarding the franchise. As he said:

I want to clarify this: it’s not like I’m going through a living hell or something. I’ve had the kind of experience that you only dream about as a filmmaker. That has actually turned me into a bigger Star Wars fan than I was before, which is quite something because I grew up with it as my childhood’s foundation.

What Became of Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy?

Most fans of the franchise have probably forgotten Johnson’s new Star Wars trilogy, especially with how much content Disney has pumped out following The Last Jedi. However, in the marketing period leading to the film’s release, it was revealed by Disney that Rian Johnson would also design a new trilogy for the saga.

A large number of Star Wars fans thought that the lukewarm reception of The Last Jedi spelled the end for Johnson’s prospective trilogy. But he seems to have moved on to other projects – for better or for worse – directed elsewhere. Bullet point fans celebrated Johnsons departure from star wars after The Last Jedi, not due to the controversy surrounding his Star Wars film, but because it allowed him to direct the amazing Knives Out films.
