Synopsis
Love and Monsters is a 2020 post-apocalyptic adventure comedy film directed by Michael Matthews and co-penned by Brian Duffield and Matthew Robinson. Dylan O’Brien portrays Joel Dawson, a young man traversing a world ridden with monsters to reunite with his girlfriend from high school. The film features an imaginative world and heartfelt moments with a blend of science fiction, romance, and coming of age stories—widely regarded as an emerging American genre.
The storyline is set in a world that has undergone a catastrophic transformation 7 years prior to the story. An asteroid approaching earth caused humans to attempt to destroy it with missiles. Instead, the attempted destruction resulted in chemical fallout which cold blooded animals such as insects and amphibians of the earth to te anomalously metamorphose, becoming aggressive empires. In a short span, these beasts were able to eliminate the majority of the human race, and the remaining few were forced into underground colonies.
Joel Dawson happens to be one such survivor, cohabitating in a bunker. Unlike his fellow survivors, Dawson does not possess any combat skills, and tends to freeze up in threatening situations. As a result, he feels out of place and spends his time sculpting meals, fixing radios, and drawing menacing creatures in a personal sketchbook—but he desires to do something far more significant than merely survive.
Joel reconnects with his high school girlfriend, Aimee, through the radio, but she now lives in another colony 85 miles away. During these years, he had not met her for the past seven years, but now he is willing to undertake the above ground journey to meet her. It is a very risky decision, especially considering that he has no prior experience of the surface which is now full of deadly creatures.
On his journey, he has to contend with various spells as well as some dangerous constituents such as a giant toad, sandworms, and ant-like monsters. He also acquires a loyal stray dog called Boy who serves as his companion and protects him while traveling. Joel meets other survivors such as Clyde and Minnow who are more experienced than he is. They help him learn monster ecosystem and survival tactics. They also make him realize that not all monsters are hostile and some, especially those with intelligent eyes, only attack when provoked.
Joel’s physical journey represents a transformative experience. He acquires confidence, learns the value of friendship and resilience, and gradually begins to grasp the subtleties of this new world. Upon reaching Aimee’s colony, he is shocked to find out that things are not as they seemed. Aimee has indeed changed, but so has the colony, which is now under siege from an untrustworthy survivor named Cap who intends to exploit their resources.
Joel must confront his romantic ideals and harsh realities, forcing him to make brave choices to defend vulnerable lives. In the end, he returns to his colony and inspires people to abandon the underground dwellings and resurface, marking a new era in mankind’s relationship with the Earth.

Coming of Age in a Dangerous World
Love and Monsters is, first and foremost, a story of growing up. Joel’s journey marks his emotional development from boy to man. The monsters represent fears and challenges that must be faced and defeated to achieve personal growth.
Romantic Idealism vs. Reality
A long-distance romance, fueled by nostalgia, is what drives Joel to trek towards Aimee. However, traversing the monster-infested terrain forces him to confront the reality of her existence – people evolve. The film also undermines the concept of ‘happily ever after’ by suggesting love sometimes means releasing something instead of claiming it.
Adaptation and Coexistence
One of the movie’s major takeaways is that not all monsters are dangerous by nature. Some only become aggressive when under threat. It reinforces the idea of nature’s coexistence with humanity as well as the misplaced fear that creates conflict.
Hope and Human Resilience
Even with a worldwide disaster, we still have some hope left as humans will always find a way to adapt. In the film, Joel’s transformation reveals how one’s determination, acts of kindness, and courage can lead to transformation.
